About 60 percent of nursing home residents in Germany are affected by dementia. As there is currently no cure for this disease, research is increasingly looking for possibilities of non-drug treatment for the growing number of people with dementia. The focus is on approaches which can improve the quality of life of the affected through experiencing positive activities and social interactions. In addition to established therapies such as painting, music and movement therapies it is also attempted to use the latest communications technologies for this purpose. In our digital world technical devices such as smart phones and tablets are already part of everyday life for many people. The initial research results indicate that these technologies can be an important support in the care of people with dementia. What does PflegeTab stand for?
In the project PflegeTab a multi-professional team consisting of experienced professionals from the DOMICIL senior residences and researchers from both the Technical University of Berlin and the Charité University Medicine has teamed up. Together, we want to investigate how the quality of life of nursing home residents with dementia can be influenced positively through the use of tablets. In 2013 a promising pilot study was conducted in the nursing home DOMICIL at Schlosspark Berlin-Pankow. The results showed that participants were able to adopt the new technology amazingly well and also noticeably benefited from the use.How can PflegeTab improve the care of patients affected by dementia? As part of PflegeTab a novel application (“app”) for tablets is designed. It is specifically tailored to the needs of people with dementia. It allows to create individually tailored services for those affected by the disease: Fun and motivating elements adapt flexibly and automatically to the particular resources and needs of the individual. Thereby excessive demands can be avoided. From the patterns of interaction of a user with the system one can gather information about his condition. This should help to detect changes in the individual at an early stage. In addition, the system offers a number of easy to use functions, which can support and encourage people with dementia in their communication with relatives or caregivers. In this way, the system can also help to relieve relatives and caregivers.
What happens in the PflegeTab-Study?
In order to test PflegeTab scientifically a clinical study is performed in the Berlin senior residences of DOMICIL. In the participating institutions residents with dementia will receive the newly developed tablet-based stimulation and care program for a period of three months. In the subsequent pre-post comparison we examine whether the tablet-based stimulation positively influences significant factors, such as well-being, level of activity or mental performance.
