In our digital world technical devices such as smart phones and tablets are already part of everyday life for many people. The initial research results indicate that these technologies can be an important support in the care of people with dementia.
What does PflegeTab stand for?
In the project PflegeTab a multi-professional team consisting of experienced professionals from the DOMICIL senior residences and researchers from both the Technical University of Berlin and the Charité University Medicine has teamed up. Together, we want to investigate how the quality of life of nursing home residents with dementia can be influenced positively through the use of tablets.
In 2013 a promising pilot study was conducted in the nursing home DOMICIL at Schlosspark Berlin-Pankow. The results showed that participants were able to adopt the new technology amazingly well and also noticeably benefited from the use.
How can PflegeTab improve the care of patients affected by dementia?
As part of PflegeTab a novel application (“app”) for tablets is designed. It is specifically tailored to the needs of people with dementia. It allows to create individually tailored services for those affected by the disease: Fun and motivating elements adapt flexibly and automatically to the particular resources and needs of the individual. Thereby excessive demands can be avoided. From the patterns of interaction of a user with the system one can gather information about his condition. This should help to detect changes in the individual at an early stage. In addition, the system offers a number of easy to use functions, which can support and encourage people with dementia in their communication with relatives or caregivers. In this way, the system can also help to relieve relatives and caregivers.
What are the goals of PflegeTab?
The project’s goal is to increase the quality of life and well-being of nursing home residents with dementia. In addition, the project is dedicated to the question of how to support work processes in everyday life of professional nurses through the use of tablets. Easy communication functions facilitate the interconnectedness and the information exchange of professional caregivers and relatives. In order to use these advantages nationwide we are developing a training concept for the use of PflegeTab in the care of people with dementia. As a result, the project team hopes to create a sustainable and comprehensive tablet-based service concept for people affected by dementia.
